4K TV vs 8K TV: Is 8K Worth Paying For?
8K TVs have four times as many pixels as 4K TVs. On paper that sounds like a huge upgrade. In practice, whether you can see the difference depends on screen size, how close you sit and what you watch.
Pros of a 4K TV
- Content everywhere: streaming services, game consoles and discs widely support 4K.
- Better value: at the same price, a 4K TV usually offers better contrast, brightness or a larger screen.
- Wide choice: every panel technology, from budget LED to premium OLED, comes in 4K.
Cons of a 4K TV
- Resolution ceiling: on very large screens viewed up close, fine detail can look softer than on 8K.
- Future formats: if native 8K content becomes common, 4K sets will not show its full detail.
Pros of an 8K TV
- Extra sharpness on huge screens: at sizes of around 75 inches and above, viewed from close distances, some viewers notice finer detail.
- Strong processing: 8K models are usually premium sets with advanced upscaling and good HDR performance.
Cons of an 8K TV
- Very little native content: most of what you watch is 4K or lower and must be upscaled.
- Higher price: you pay a premium for pixels you may not see from a normal sofa distance.
- Bandwidth and power: native 8K needs HDMI 2.1 bandwidth and fast internet, and larger premium panels can use more energy.
Viewing distance decides
Human eyes can resolve only so much detail at a given distance. From a typical living-room distance, most people cannot distinguish 8K from 4K on screens below the largest sizes. If you sit far back, spending on contrast, brightness and HDR will improve the picture far more than extra pixels.
Upscaling matters more than resolution
Because most content is 4K or HD, the TV's processing determines how good it looks. A premium 4K TV with excellent upscaling and contrast often looks better than an 8K TV with weaker panel performance at the same price.
Verdict: which to choose
Choose 4K for almost every room and budget, and spend the difference on a better panel or a larger screen. Consider 8K only for very large screens viewed up close, when budget is not a concern and the 8K model also excels at contrast and HDR.
